There are many competitors to Mercedes-Benz that are american companies. See, the company has a wide selection of vehicles and what can be considered competition, truly varies from one car to the next because of Price, Features, Etc. For example, the upper class AMG models would have competitiors like the Cadillac V-series and the Dodge Viper and Chevy Corvette. On the other hand though, Mercedes' cheaper models would have cheaper competition, like cheaper Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Cadillac, etc.

I like the interior design of mercedes. The Lexus interior is boring and no surprise. Some of us say the technology wise would be Lexus. I don't agree. Mercedes is famous that its technologies are what every other car company will copy that year. Lexus claims 100 new developments but majority of them are adjustments / changes made - not new features at all.

Nice topic. I would have to say that Lexus and BMW are the two companies that come closest to Mercedes in terms of competition. Your paper may benefit from expanding the company to include all of Daimler Chrysler and then compare it to Toyota's business.
