Hereunder is a link to a picture of a caul. The Caul is also referred to as The Veil, as it covers the face of the child at birth. However, it is not the amniotic residue. The confusion between the two types of membrane (as that is what both are, but of a differing nature); one being the residue of the amnion, the inner lining of the birth sac, and therefore being part of the mother; the other being a distinct membrane covering the face of the newborn child, and therefore being of the child's own particular genetic material.
Children born with a genuine Caul are referred to as Caulbearers, and this phenomenon give rise to the term of "Being born behind The Veil".
Jesus was allegedly born with a Caul, and such persons were regarded as being "Kings by Right" as their births could be calculated in advance; hence the story of Herod and the wise men from the East. The legends surrouding the idea of a person owning a caul and not drowning came from the story of Moses being found in the reeds, as he too was a King by Right. You may remember the similarities between the two births.

I don't know where you got that shite about a caul being a curse, but for centuries it's been considered good luck and a sign of greatness for a child do be born with a caul, or be a caul-bearer.
A caul is a thin shimmery layer over the face, it's the remnants of the baby's amniotic sack.
Demon my ****. A child born with a caul was said to be impervious to drowning, more sensitive to the hardships of others, and some thought it made the child have the Sight. often a midwife would press it on butcher paper and give it to the mother as a badge of honour or sell it to sailors for good luck, bounty and safety on their travels.
