I had a nightmare time trying to cancel with AOL. They REFUSED to take NO for an answer. I was on the phone over 40 minutes with one of their people who took pleasure in not canceling my AOL. I had to go to my credit card company to stop future payments. I will NEVER use it again. I tell anyone who is interested, to STAY AWAY.

I was anticipating a 25 minute argument with AOL. But I think I was just lucky to get the right person the first time. The AOL employee was nice and I told her that I wanted to cancel because I no longer had access to a computer. She offered the free 3 months in case I got a new one. I just told her no I'm not interested. She said ok and cancelled my account with no further charges. I'm glad I didn't have a problem, but I have heard the horror stories about them.

Its about the same with any internet service, they all try to keep you and offer you many different things. I don't like aol though, for one most of their customer centers are in India and they don't speak a word of English so understanding them is like pulling teeth. Secondly they offer you such a good deal and then screw you over. Several years ago I called to cancel and they gave me three months free, so after the three months I called and canceled. Well about 6 months later I recieved a bill from them for over $100!!!!! When I called and got someone I couldn't understand they told me to get the free months I needed to go to billing on my account page and put in a code, a code the rep never gave me, I told them I would never pay a dime and that it was a scam and they should be sorry for themselves. I have never used them since.

I love this question! A few years ago, I attempted to cancel AOL & they continued putting me off by telling me gibberish about their billing cycle. They offered three additional monrhs free, but I didn't need, want or use it, as I had already switched to DSL. The process took 4 months & my credit card was charged $24.95 for each of those 4 months. I finally cancelled my card & that was the end of it. I was out a ton of money but elated to be free of the giant!

Back in the day I used a free trial. It was for like 200 hours. Found out how much it sucked, so we cancelled. They tried to charge us a ton of money for using like 400 hours when we had only been on about 20. Screw AOL.

Yep, they double charged my account every month and I had to talk to 5 different people before I got a manager who said she would refund my money...but not before she tried to make some kind of deal with me over 10 times. I finally said "Lady, if you don't cancel this service now and send my refund, I will report you to the better business bureau." It took a month, but I finally got the damn refund!! Now my niece is going through the same crap with them!!! AOL SUCKS!!

25 minutes is a big improvement over what it used to be.
There were stories of people not being able to cancel for months. AOL is pretty famous for being jerks about this.
There was even a lawsuit (that AOL lost) about their tactics of continuing to charge people long after they said they wanted to cancel.

There are 2 easy ways to cancel the account- #1. Try your darnedness to violate their TOS policy. Go into chat rooms and be vulgar and nasty and abusive. #2. Tell the rep that you would like to cancel your account because an evil preditor came to your house and took your kid's computer.
Or simply tell them that the computer is broken and you cant afford to get it fixed.

Yup! Happened on a couple of occasions to me and others I know.
The best way to do it I ever heard of was a buddy who told them he was addicted to chat rooms, and that if they didn't cancel his account immediately he was afraid he would go off the deep end. He claims it only took 5 minutes to cancel =)
