The path is simple:
1.- Get a good coach. Nationality should not be an issue.
2.- Do what they did before the world cup hosted in the US. That means make the US team play like a team. Do it for the year before the world cup.
3.- You might need to add few new citizens to complete the team (this is called importing talent).
For the long run... 20 years: continue to do what they are doing that is:
1) Invest $$$$ in child and junior sport development
2) Increase the level of the national league (bring European and South American players when they are still young, not at the end of their professional life.
3) Play more with European and South American countries as preparation.
....
And please....
Start calling the game by it's name:
Football.
Good luck!

This is what we get for slacking off for fourty years. The US never aspired to become a great soccer nation, sticking to the NBA, NFL, or MLB, all the while the rest of the world playing soccer. Now it's too late! Just kidding.
Seriously I think we do need to invest on our young kids. Inspire them and motivate them to play soccer just like the other nations of the world. It's either that, or let's just stick to baseball. Oh by the way, World baseball was inaugurated in San Diego only a few months ago but the US didn't win that either. I think Brazil won it.

They need to send some of their better players to play overseas to compete with the elite players. They need to find a scorer and let go of players who aren't all that good, i.e., Claudio Reyna. I'm glad he retired, he didn't do much for the team this year except take a spot on the team.

Arena is a good coach... But he and the team need more international experience... he did lead UVA to 4 nat'l titles in a row... so he's got the goods and leadership... and he did lead the DC united to a couple of championships... but we just need more experience at the highest level...

More investment at the grass roots level. i dont think USA can become a challenging force in 2010. i think a more realist target needs to be 2014 or even 2018.

they need good strikers, we need more experience players, i guess they couldnt make it to second round because of the pressure they had this year, pleople were expecting that US was going to go further than the qualifier round and they put all the pressure on the players unlike 1998, people dind't think they were going anywhere so the players didnt have to carry the pressure on the field.

They need to put more money into the program and get more people in the U.S. interested in the sport. The more interest, the more competition and better players come out with better skills.
