Because you're cutting off your brain's oxygen supply... duh.

The dizziness that occurs during hyperventilation is caused by the loss of too much CO2 (DocAlex must be post-call or something because hyperventilation absolutely *does not* increase the amount of CO2 in the blood--it does the exact opposite). Breathing into a bag increases the amount of CO2 that you inhale, so that your blood pH will normalize.

There is some debate about whether the paper bag remedy is appropriate for hyperventilation. Apparently there have been some cases of people breathing into the paper bag too long and becoming hypercapnic. I think it's tough to beat such a cheap and effective method. Just make sure you watch the patient.

Well, hyperventilation of any kind is dangerous and unhealthy and can result in dizziness. But the reason hyperventilating into a bag may prevent dizziness is because you are breathing in the same air you breathed out. If you hyperventilate without a bag, the air you breathe out dissipates into the room with the rest of the air, which can have many other molecules such as nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Whereas when you hyperventilate into the bag, the air doesn't dissipate, it is just recycled and therefore the concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide don't fluctuate as much.

Bercause when you hyperventilate into a bag, you are re breathing the same air you just exhaled.
Normal air is 21% oxygen, exhaled air is more like 15%. So if yuo re breathe that from a bag you get less and less oxxygen, to such an extent that your brain's bretahing center temporarely shuts down, slowing your breath.
Hyperventilation is dangerous because it increases teh CO2 content of your blood therefore making it acid. This blood hyperacidity is what kills you when you hyperventilate

From what I understand it is a mental thing. If you use a paper bag to breath in when hyperventilating you are focusing on the bag and your breathing. Therefore you calm yourself down and your breathing comes under control. If this is not correct it seemed like a good answer.

Because you're not wasting you breath into the air. You are able to control the breath leaving your body. Also, it serve as a diversion to what was causing you to hyperventilate. There for slowing you breathing.

It does. I did it once and almost died. When I came back from my dream I was having while out (I had a dream I was flying above the clouds in a white gown) I didn't recognize anyone around me. I was very scared and was so happy when I was finally able to understand who I was and recognize who those people were around me.
So yes, you can without the bag.

Because the air you're breathing from the bag is gradually being reduced in oxygen from being recycled.
