He was bitter at the way his life turned out, I suppose. His mother was a squib, his father a muggle. Both of them died, his mother died by natural causes while Voldemort hunted down his father later on in his teens. He was probably furious upon realising his weak beginnings, the weakness of his mother, the muggle (or Mudblood, he would have called him...he detested Muggles and was obviously being half-Muggle) that was his father, the shame he suffered at being raised in an orphanage...you can see in the sixth book in Dumbledore's memory that even then, before he knew he was a wizard that he strived to be superior to those around him) and was seeking power to seek vengence to whatever remained of his roots since he had none and was striving to solve it by becoming the most evil and powerful wizard known in the wizarding world. He did so...hence the fear that strikes each wizard's (or witch's) heart when 'You-know-who' is within their midsts.

He blames his father for his mothers death, she had tricked his Muggle father (Tom Riddle Snr) into loving her with a love potion. When he realised what had happened he left her.
She then died giving birth to Tom Riddle Jnr (Lord Voldemort) as she was poor and outcast.
She also to top it off was a squibb (a pureblood with no magical ability)
In his hatred Voldemort returned to his fathers home and murdered the whole family.
Voldemort hated her and blamed her in a childish way also because of the fact that she gave his dad the potion and that she had died when he was born and had left him as an orphan.

he turned evil becuase of his childhood. his dad didnt want him and his mother died. as he grew older and found his powers he knew he could use them for whatever he wanted. he didnt believe in failure, he just believed in power, and he felt there was nothing better power than evil, controlling ways. as he never experienced the power of love he didnt know that that was the greatest power. this we discover in the first book when harry faces voldemort/quirell. quirell couldnt bare to touch harry because of his history. his mum died to save him, the greatest force of love drove her to do this. this love is something vol couldnt touch, couldnt stand that how defeated him as a baby and when he was 11.
when voldemort realised he could do anything with his power he choose evil as i said. this gave him what he though the upmost power. and in many ways it did. he succeeded in a lot of things. like ollivander said, voldemort id great things, evil, but great.
once his powers and his following grew stronger, he became almost unstoppable. when he heard part of his prophecy he did not want his power to end. he choose the child he thought was involved in the prophecy (lets not forget neville as he was born iaround the same time also so did voldemort get it right?) and tried to stop this child from ruining his success. but as we discovered harry was protected.
voldemorts lack of understanding of power is already showing hence his evilness, but i think he will learn soon that he doesnt know everything.
so to wrap up, voldemort turned evil because:
his lack of love as a child
his realisation of his powers and what he could get with them
his power and his followers
his non existent knowledge of love
and the fear of the prophecy.
sorry its so long
also i think it is because when he had an understanding of pure bloods, 'mud' bloods, and being half and half and what slytherin believed he knew his father was muggle and couldnt stand it. his hatred of this and what he thought was his lack of superiority made him more determined to prove himself as great. his evil doings are a way of proving he is better than being half anf half rather that a pureblood.

He was seduced by the dark side, just like every bad guy in fantasy fiction. They think that by becoming powerful through being evil they will fill the sad little vaccuum that exists within them. : )

Because of his anger. He became evil because he never got over being angry. It consumed him. He's the same kind of character that Anakin/Darth Vader is. It's anger and fear that make people actually act out against others pre-emptively.

He was always different than other kids, and had more of a mean streak. Once he got to know magic, he felt that he had power over other beings and wanted to rule everyone.
