i have a pet rat and she ALWAYS runs across people and leaves a lot of pee on them. She will literally chase you around the house, hold on to your foot as your walking and try to pee on you! i dont know how to train her to stop this. I've tried rubbing her nose in it and putting her back in her cage but nothing helps!

This sounds like a dominance issue and she is marking her territory/possessions. She is saying that she owns you or anyone else she pees on. The only way to stop this kind of behaviour is to have her spayed. This is a lot like what dogs will do even females, by peeing on you to mark you as their own.

I've had many rats but have never had this particular problem occur. I've had rats do this that are new to my home and very nervous but they tend to stop after a little while. I've also had rats that have gotten old that 'leak' a little and pregnant females that do the same. But in all of those situations, it's only ever been a tiny little spot or puddle - especially by the femles. I've never had a female mark her territory, just my males. It may just end up being kind of a quirk of hers that you may not entirely be able to stop but you may want to consider having a vet look at it just to make sure there's no infection or other problem. If there's nothing medically wrong with her and the vet doesn't have any ideas, it may just be a problem you need to live with as inconvenient as it sounds. Good luck!

There are a couple of reasons she could be doing this.

1. Marking her territory
2. Very nervous
3. Urinary Tract Infection.

Every male rat I've had (I havent had any females) Always mark their territories. They leave piddles and a small trail of urine. But there is nothing you can do to stop it unless you neuter or spay the animal.

Rubbing her nose into the pee is not going to help.

Are you sure it's a female?? Males do mark their territory by dribbling urine when they walk. Sounds like this rat is marking.

A scared rat of either gender may release his/her bladder. This is just a case of only buying socialized animals & handling them often to where they're not terrified when outside the cage.

Don't rub her nose in it. This will just confuse/scare the rat... she's not a dog.

he probable received't end. adult males do fragrance mark round their cage, inspite of in the journey that they are rather properly littertrained. in case you wipe them down in many cases with a moist cloth, it leaves sufficient fragrance there no longer to deliver him right into a frenzy of re-marking all of it, yet keeps it sparkling.
