for someone who can't go to fashion design school, and decides instead to be a "self taught" designer, what are the BEST books out there that you would recommend to help with sketching, cutting patterns...etc.

These are four I would highly suggest to start out with:

1) Clothing Construction and Wardrobe Planning:
A must for anyone begining in the industry. Learning the basic of putting the garment together is just the first step. Once you learn that, the understanding of planning a wardrobe will assist you in putting together pieces to form your clothing line.

2) Draping for Fashion Design:
Pretty self explanitory. You'll probably start out making your own stuff and then outsource to have patterns made. You'll want to make the sample piece correctly and this will help you learn how to do that

3) Inside Fashion Design:
Outlined the basic ins and outs of the industry so you know what to do once you've got your line complete and lastly...

4)Guide to Producing a Fashion Show :
Practically THE holy grail for learning how to put on a runway show.

All of these are available on my site for purchase.

The first and most important thing to know is the texture of fabrics. Learn your different fabrics, and go from there.
