Opposites are not negations of each other, but the position by which you could not be further from the original. For example, if I had a line with "Full" and "Empty" on the edges to denote states of occupied capacity, then this makes Full and Empty opposites as they are located with the greatest distance between them than any other two points on the line. However, a negation of "Empty" could well be "Not Empty", which means there is something there regardless of amount.
If 0% represents Empty, and Full is 100%, then Not Empty means Not 0%, which means anything else, such as 25%, 76%, 48% and even 0.00001%.

However, to the question of "Is nothing, something?" I answer a yes. "Nothing" is a state of having Not Something, but in a contextual sense. Nothing, as opposed to Empty, means you are deliberately recording that there is a lack of Something there. This could be a zero, a dash, or a remark that there is nothing there, but whatever you record it with, it will be fitting for the circumstance. However, an Empty is the non-recording of information - a lack of even the knowledge of nothing there.

But then, it is open to interpretation. "Nothing" is just a concept. Like a symbol "1" means a single unit or "Car" means a motorised vehicle with four wheels and a design that matches our preconceived ideas. "Nothing" to some means a lack of something, others argue a "Nothing" is something we use in place of the void left behind of a lack of something.

It is, after all, something and nothing.

Nope. The opposite of something is (lack of something). The opposite of money is debt. The opposite of high up is underground. Nothing is half way between the two. I think. Er....

No nothing is nothing. By definition if something does not exist it cannot have an opposite. That can only happen if nothing is used in relation to something i.e. "there is nothing in my bag:" has the opposite of "There is something in my bag.

Nothing on it's own is simply nothing and therefore nothing exists.

Keep trying to follow your arguament and you are going to do your head in!

Something is not the opposite of nothing. The real opposite of nothing is everything.

So..."if the opposite of everything is nothing, then nothing is the opposite to everything". That makes sense now, doesn't it!

Nothing is No-thing which is the absence of Some-thing. Since energy is neither created nor destroyed but just reorganised( so am told). I think it is fair to say No-thing is Some-Thing. Just like visible matter, there is also dark matter. This dark matter, like No-thing, I understand only becomes visible under certain conditions.

"We believe that most of the matter in the universe is dark, i.e. cannot be detected from the light which it emits (or fails to emit). This is "stuff" which cannot be seen directly -- so what makes us think that it exists at all? Its presence is inferred indirectly from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations. It is also required in order to enable gravity to amplify the small fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background enough to form the large-scale structures that we see in the universe today. " -Martin White

Hope that helps!

unfortunatly the little game of opposites is not a true science. a cars opposite is not a lorry and a lorrys opposite is not a car. so there arent really opposites. actualy the only true opposites are anti matter and matter e.g electrons are anihilated by positrons so i suppose theyre opposites uhhh i cant reallything of any others. so the opposite of something is not nothing its antisomething, soo opposites dont usually come into it,

True. The human brain labels things and so they exist (for us).

The most confusing thing is nihilism, often defined by self-proclaimed nihilists as 'the belief in nothing'. It's absurd: to say 'I don't believe anything' is in itself the expression of a belief.

Just like postmodernism, defined by Lyotard as 'an incredulity towards metanarratives', which therefore defines postmodernism as a metanarrative and so defeats itself instantly.

But the most perplexing of all it that despite recognising these logical flaws I still find myself attracted to nihilistic and postmodern beliefs... perhaps because I don't 'believe' in the flawlessness of logic, or perhaps because there is nothing better to believe in.

Any Buddhist will assure you that everything is nothing, which in real terms is absolutely true!
But since you would probably dispute that you are nothing, and therefore doubtless conclude that you must be something, Something is nothing, and nothing is something.
QED.
