I don't think most homeless people truly deserve to be homeless. I think that's like asking if all murder victims deserve to be murdered. Or all starving children deserve to be starving. There are such a wide range of reasons a person can become homeless, that it's unfair to judge them as a whole. Do I think most of them could pull themselves up and stop being homeless? No, I don't. Do I think they should at least TRY? Yes, I do. But, the sad fact is if you run a McDonalds and a 16 year old boy applies for a job and the 35 year old homeless guy does, they will hire the 16 year old every time. Because he's clean, he has an address to mail official paperwork to, and because you figure he's more likely to show up every day and you would assume the homeless guy wouldn't. It wouldn't matter if the 16 year old has never had a job before and the homeless guy was a veteran of a war and was once a general manager of some great big store who became homeless when he lost his wife and kids to a drunk driver and had trouble functioning, couldn't work any longer and *poof* they took his house. End of story for the poor guy.

deserve is not the correct word. I do believe that the majority of homeless are homeless due to the decisions they made in their life. Some people (hurricane victims for instance) became homeless due to uncontrolable circumstances.
The cost of living is not real low. Where I live a one bedroom apartment is well over $1000 a month, gas is 3.29 a gallon, utilities at least $100 a month. How about food? Unless it's ramen or mac and cheese that is about a $100 a week because you know you are going to want to eat out at the local sizzler at least once. And then lets talk about the cost of insurance both for medical and auto...
I have no idea how somebody gets by making less than 30k a year. You would have to make $15 an hour working full time just to live paycheck to paycheck.

Not all homeless people deserve to be homeless. Some of them lost absolutely everything: home, family, car, job, etc. So, they had no choice but to live on the streets. Other ones are mentally sick and can't make it in the world. The rest of them are just homeless and no one knows why.
How can the cost of living be low? At what cost? They have to sleep outside in all weather conditions, risk having anything they get stolen, their dignity and pride are gone, they have to scavenger for food like animals and never know when or where their next meal will be, etc. Or do you mean that the cost of living is low if they weren't homeless? How would you figure that? Cost of living anywhere is really high.

No I do not .... (and so ya know , it depends on where you live as to how high/low cost of living is)
I used to see homeless people. or ones living in shleters and wonder WHY - why don't they get a job, etc... I wondered that until I was in the same situation. Everybody has different stories as to why it happens, and I'll admit mine was due to bad choices, but I had to live in a shelter .. Now there are some people who actually abuse it, and CHOOSE to stay there instead of getting jobs and saving money for a place to live... I dont feel too sorry for those, but then there are people who hit hard times, and it takes time to get back on your feet too. Beacause when you become homeless, you are pretty much at your lowest and unless you have someone to help you, it takes time to get your head above water again. Noone deserves to be homeless, but generally everything that happens to us is result of choices we made.. that doesn't mean we necessarily deserve the outcome, but instead we learn by life's experiences, and hopefully make darn sure things like that never happen again..

Jesus! Some of you are really harsh. Of course homeless people dont deserve it!! Its 2006 people, not 1500 ... most people who are homeless have had horrific lives- physical and sexual abuse, drug addiction etc. basically totally unstructured and random lives. They dont necessarily make the choices that we would as they have had so much to deal with that they dont even think the same way as someone with a more comfortable life.
I am embarrassed that people would be so ignorant and cruel to assume that homeless people 'deserve' to be homeless. Shame on you.

Well, there are a couple of types of homeless people. Some are elderly or too young to help themselves. Some are mentally ill and need to be locked up. I think that the ones you are talking about are the ones hooked on drugs- the most popular version on the streets today. I feel sorry for any person who is not on drugs and needs help. If your taking drugs- then you can rot on the street.

No they do not deserve it.I blame the government for this.Sure some have drug and alcohol issues Which is by the way a disease. If they have no family to help them,Then who is going to care whether they are homeless or not?It should be up to the government to make sure no one is homeless whether they provide homes for the needy or institutions for the addicts. An example of this that I have seen myself:My parents which luckily I was here for them and have a close family,My father worked and had a steady job,He got sick and was diagnosed with lung cancer,No he never smoked,It started off as skin cancer(mellenoma),It took every cent they had and then some for medical treatment. This includes what little help was available. They lost their home due to this illness.I had an extra home that was not much but the payments were low enough,I helped them get into it.They applied for government aid and was denied because it was based on the previous years income. Not too long after that he passed away and my mother was left to make ends meet with no income and she was limited on the jobs that she could get due to health issues. She applied for government aid and was given a one time payment called burial benefit from social security of $250,she also qualified for $16 a month food stamps because of my fathers income from the previous year, even though it was spent on medical. That is all she had and could get and did not qualify to draw on my fathers social security for 7 years.Luckily I and my family was around for her or she would have been homeless with no help.I am sure this is not the first time this has happened and I can see where this could lead to being homeless. The government could care a little a consider the facts of what has happened on an individual basis and be able to waive income ammounts to help you qualify in a time of true need. The government should see that each city cleans up as far as making sure no one is homeless. They could see that each homeless person is fed and housed and clothed decent enough to go in and apply for a job and help them out until they can get out on their own insted of trying to make sure other countries have schools, food and shelter.Yes ,I feel sorry for some of these people in other countries and I am not saying don't help them but they have their own government to take care of them.Lets take care of our people first.
Good luck and god bless you

I really don't think homeless people deserve or desire to be homeless. Something happened in their life and that is where they are in their life. With so many cuts being placed on the poor and intergent, by the local and federal government, its amazing we all are not homeless.....:0..unless you are rich and well off.

I believe MOST homeless people that remain that way for a long period of time have either mental health issues or drug/alcohol problems.
I truly think it is a shame that we can help nations all over the world but we do not take care of our mentally ill, our children and our elderly in our own country. We have a responsibility to clean our own house before we move on to our neighbors.

No. No one deserves to be homeless.
They just need help or can't handle living within some of the rules of society.
