J2SE stands for Java 2 Standard Edition.
J2SE contains the core set of Java libraries woth which you can write most standalone applications you'd want to create.

There are two other editions of Java:
J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition), which allows you to develop enterprise appliactions that run on application servers like Websphere, WebLogic and JBoss.
J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), which allows you to develop Java applications suitable for limited devices like PDAs and cellular phones.
