How are names significant?

This question was meant to be general. Please just tell me what you think names mean to you and why they are important.

You name forms part of your identity in the sense that it's with you practically from birth, it's been used to refer to you since you were born (or even before), people hear your name and associate it with you. If other people call you by your name, you know they're talking to you.

It's just by association really - you could have any name and the name itself doesn't mean much, other than what names your parents like and can also give a few pointers about your origin geographically - the only thing that really matters is that it is used to refer to you as a person. It's the most convenient way to have a common reference point to talk about the same person.
