Many people oppose birth control or abortion, but still go through fertility treatments. This is still interfering with natural reproduction or God's will, so what is the difference? Again, I am really trying to understand what I think is a fascinating moral issue, so please don't tell me that I have no right to ask the question.

I just read a magazine story yesterday while awaiting my prenatal visit in my doctors office. It was about a woman who taught art in a Catholic school. She was having trouble getting preggos, so she went and did IVF. They took her egg, her hubby's sperm and fertilized them outside of the womb, then planted them in her. She got preggos, told the school and they fired her for failure to follow the school boards ethics.

She tried suing for her job back but the courts said that the Catholic school had the right to terminate her based on their code of conduct.

So, I guess the answer to your question is fertility treatments are not accepted by all and in this case, they saw the situation exactly as you posed in your question, an interference with natural reproduction.

Those who oppose abortion and BC don't oppose it because you are interfering they oppose it because you are ending or preventing a life. Did you know that when you take BC pills the egg still gets fertilized by the sperm but the hormones don't allow it to attach to the uterine wall so the body expells the zygote.
Those same people who feel fertility treatment is alright are not hypocrits. In this case they are just supporting the attempt to create new life.

This is a good question. I think that those who oppose birth control and abortion have concerns about preventing life. Fertility treatments, on the other hand, can fix problems of infertility that are environmental and promote life.

But this is a fascinating moral issue, I agree.

You have the freedom to ask any question that you want an answer to, that doesn't mean that you are always going to get that answer. I look at it like this, i believe in birth control, however, in my opinion, an abortion is no where near birth control, and I feel that if a couple have tried everything else to conceive and nothing has worked for them, then it is perfectly fine. Some people's religion does not allow them to use birth control or have abortions. That is why alot of people oppose them. I personally only oppose abortions.

Hi, knitmomma! Many people who oppose abortion and abortifacient methods of birth control also oppose those assisted reproduction procedures which result in the death of unborn children. This is really the only consistent position to take. Take a look at this site for more information:

Hope this helps! :)

Some people who oppose birth control may believe it is wrong to interfere with the egg and sperm meeting each other (wrong to prevent the creation of a new person). But undergoing fertility treatments encourages the creation of a new person, so they may see no harm in this.

It's not about going against nature or god's will. Abortion kills children, totally different from trying to bring one into the world. I don't see how that can even be put into the same category! Birth control is against some people's religion because it promotes sex before marriage and does not prevent stds.

There is no difference. People who think that way are hypocrites.
