In reality, most would probably respond, "because where's the reward"? And how observant of you to notice it's demise!

Have you even been in a checkout line when the cash register isn't working, and the clerk can't figure out how much to charge, or if they make that first step, are stuck on how to make change?

Or a clerk so engrossed in chatting with the bagger that they miss how much you gave them, give you the wrong change, and really get flustered when you call them on it?

In my job as a night auditor for a local motel, really find it frustrating when clerks make mistakes, then try to make adjustments to the accounts and get things more messed up, and don't have the courtesy (and isn't courtesy making a disappearing act as well?) to leave a note of what they were trying to accomplish.

I'll agree with Joe K's assessment as far as TV goes, but disagree about the Internet, maybe make it IM, but the Internet, in and of itself, isn't the problem. That's like saying it's the radio waves (not TV) that is causing loss of common sense.

And don't even get me started on parent's disciplining their children as a later answerer suggested. It's not the parent's fault, but government by inserting itself in judging a parent as abusive when disciplining children, to the point of taking the children out of the home until the parents get counseling.

Desensitized by TV and music, most likely. Children nowadays spend their time playing video games and watching TV, not playing and learning about such things as common sense.

My seventh grade homeroom teacher always said, "Common sense is not so common." I think people are too much in a hurry to give anything any thought. They grasp onto the first idea that comes to mind. Our culture wants a quick fix to everything and instant gratification.

I ask myself the same question almost daily.

I wish I knew. I guess because our society has become so dependent on others and having everything done for them (i.e.: fast food, search engines, technology...) that they don't think it's important to think about their actions or try to take responsibility for themselves.
It's like people just don't think anymore!!!

I work in a hospital and people bring their kids in with high fevers without even trying to give them Tylenol or Motrin!!!! They don't need to be at the hospital, they need to be in bed - resting and the parents should be checking their temps and giving them medicine if necessary.

I'm curious to see what kinds of answers you get on this question and what you personally think.

the definition of common sense can change from person to person just like morals can. It all depends on how you were raised and what your experiences in life have taught you. Some people base common sense on observation of someone else's mistakes or experiences.. some people base common sense on their own lives.

Parents don't let their kids live and learn. They shelter them too much. If you can't live life then you don't get the common sense that goes along with living life... but In parents defense (because I am one..lol) there are so many crazy pedophiles running around it makes it very nerve wracking to let your kids live and learns as they used to be able to.

TV and the internet has allowed people to stop using their brains. Thus, nobody is forced to think and figure things out like they used to many years ago.
