Is it a simple transition because they are putting on an act when they try to rap and be 'hard'?

That's it exactly. They've been playing a character throughout their careers, so playing that same character in a movie is not much of a stretch.

Although, from what I hear, "50-Cent" gave an absolutely stellar performance in his movie, playing himself... (not)

It's all about money, and Hollywood has done it for years. The biggest movie goers are teenagers, and if they see something they like, they go back, two or three times.
So stick some teen idol in a movie, whether he can act or not, and they will show up to see their idol.
The did it in the forties and fifties, of the last century and they will be doing in the future too. When hopefully rap is at last dead.

If a rapper is successful in the music industry, then, more than likely, he/she will be successful in film.

They can't sing...and don't have a real job...so it's either acting or running drugs...and acting won't get you killed.
