The Knicks has been a bad team mainly because of poor judgement and the pressure to win. Having the highest payroll in the league year after year doesn't always guarenteed victories and playoff berth (teamwork and trust does). The Knicks have a history of giving big contracts that never pans out in the end (see Larry Johnson and Allan Houston) and still have big contracts to deal with no end in sight. Management are making poor decisions on what to do with this team (pulling the trigger on uncecessary trades, bad free agent signing) that results to forcing to trade players with big contracts anaually, but everytime they do that, they inherit another big contract that doesn't pan out. Add to the fact that they don't have a team leader with a heart and soul make the Knicks a discouraging team. Marbury is a good player but not exactly a role model to start with and with Francis on board, this could get even worse. With a bunch of veterans on a team, I expected to see at least one leader that could motivate this team.
It's sad to see Larry Brown being let go like that after one season. Brown has been nothing short of being a great head coach, not only in the NBA, but basketball in general. Everywhere he goes, he has success (UCLA, Kansas, Spurs, Clippers, Pacers, Sixers, Pistons, etc. all either made it into the playoffs or winning a title) and along with Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, has a great philospohy on the game that makes him a sucessful coach. The Knicks never bought into that philosophy, always caring about themselves and how much they should spend rather than learning plays and making an effort to hustle on the court night in and night out. Brown didn't need all this drama and I should have think that he would have retire after he left the Pistons. Again, this was a poor decision made by the Knicks and I'm sure that Brown is going to recover from all of this, but the team is still going to suffer.
The arrival of Isiah Thomas being the new head coach comes as a desperation move by the Knicks to start winning now, rather than rebuilding. Thomas is not exactly a winner's material to start with. He has success mostly as a player for the Pistons (All-Star, Titles) but never translated that success into other ventures he commited (Raptors, CBA, etc.) expect for the Pacers. He has that reputation of being the gentleman in the NBA and I think his name alone is maybe the reason that he's staying in the organization for so long. However, being a nice guy is not going to cut it in the NBA and although his last run as an NBA coach was a success, don't count the Knicks for a sudden turnaround anytime soon.
Overall, the Knicks are still popular, namesake wise (Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, etc.), but the team is still going paying for their mistakes and pretty soon, MSG is not going to be a basketball "mecca" that people once knew.

Isiah Thomas has been a disaster on the bench and in the front office. The best thing for the Knicks owner to do is to get rid of Isiah too and bring in a new GM and coach who can get rid of the overpaid, underperforming players and develop a young, hungry squad who'll help turn the Knicks around.
Mark my word: if the Nets are able to get that arena deal straightened out in Brooklyn and the Knicks continue to be as bad as they are now, they'll start seeing plenty of empty seats at the Garden.

The best thing that could happen to the Knicks is if James Dolan sold the team to someone who knows basketball. The Knicks were screwed up even before Thomas when Layden was GM. James Dolan doesn't know his a** from his elbow when it comes to basketball and seems to only hire people who have a famous name.
I bet next season Thomas gets a few more wins than last season and somehow convinces that idiot Dolan that he is a savior to the franchise. Dolan will then give Thomas a huge contract and let Thomas go even more wild with his money. Thomas will try to revive Shawn Kemp's career and give him a max contract. Dolan will love it since Kemp used to be a big name and Dolan won't realize that he sucks now. Thomas will then trade for more former big names like Grant Hill, Kenyon Martin, and Olowakandi and give away all their draft picks to get them. The Knicks payroll will skyrocket to $200 million. They will then have the worst season ever in professional sports.
I am kind of exaggerating here but this scenario seems very plausible considering the state of the Knicks right now. It breaks my heart to see a once proud franchise turned into this freak show.

What goes around comes around. Maybe Brown shouldn't have been such a jerk in Detroit and maybe he would have been given more respect, and a lot of the firing has to do with his relationship with the players. Maurberry and Brown did not get along at all and would not work together. It was essential to remove one of them and it was easier to get rid of Brown. Maybe next time Larry should be careful what he wishes for, he might just get it! Isiah is not the right coach for the team, but really, who is? The team is a bunch of head cases who can't work together. The whole team needs to be dumped and they should start from scratch.

Isiah is just another once great player who wants to be a coach. Who knows? Maybe having a famous coach will boost morale or something, although I don't think that'll happen. I agree in that the Knicks are declining and hiring Isiah won't solve anything.

IMO, brown was fired for the reason that his relationship with the players is already tainted. as good as brown is, the only way to stop the feud is to fire him. the knicks could trade the players but they can't. considering the amount of money the players are getting and the talent and effort they give on the court, they will have a very hard time unloading them. so i guess they took the easy way out.... fire brown. sometimes no matter how good a coach is, if the chemistry aint there, his greatness would be useless.

They want change. Removing Brown is considered an opportunity for improvement. We do not have to agree.
