I was amazed at how consistenly polite everyone was in Salt Lake City, Utah. I had so many doors held open for me [I'm male] and "please" and "thank yous" that I wanted to get used to it! :o)

It's not really fair to generalize, like in your question, but I wanted to give the SLC-ers a pat on the back, based on my own experience. Good going, folks!

I remember Michigan as having very curtious drivers.
I remember being stranded in N.Y. City and no one helping me even though I was in military uniform. I just needed to get a money order cashed to pay the cab. I ran up an $11 cab ride to $40 looking for a bank that would cash it. Finally, at the last minute, an elderly woman helped me because she had an account in the 10th bank that I tried.

I'd say most Southern states are polite. Down here manners are a big thing. It's that Southern hospitatlity thing. I live in NC and I think we're a pretty curteous state. I don't really know about the least polite...

I've never been to NYC so i wouldn't know about politeness there. But i do live about a half hour away and the people where I live are very self centerd and rude. However if you go to northern NY they are VERY polite.

Myself, I'd swap Alabama with Texas on your list, and add Memphis to Knoxville.

I'm from Georgia and I've drove up north and I would definitely have to agree with you. But you do still have you ******* here.
