It astounds me when people who have gone really far in business, government, teaching, etc. have poor grammar. I think what really matters is THAT you have something to say, but if you can not say it clearly, articulately - and with an awareness of the basic rules of grammar, your idea sounds less compelling. If a person uses good grammar to express what he or she means, I can concentrate on the idea that is being expressed, rather than trying to decipher the merit of the idea while at the same time making sure I actually understand it.
And yes, it seems to me to be getting worse. Language changes and evolves - and maybe the evolution is headed toward an eventual phasing out of grammar!

It depends on what you mean by the word 'poor'.

Typically, however, I do not frown upon people who have less than perfect grammatical skills. I used to correct people whenever they made a faux pas in speaking, writing, et cetera. For example, I used to correct my Mom when she ended her sentences with the preposition "at". However, I don't engage in that activity anymore. If someone makes a mistake, unless they ask for my advice or assistance, I don't point out his or her error(s).

I suppose that grammar is getting worse- I wonder why this would be. Some users here on 'answers' make mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and other matters- but it normally doesn't bother me, unless the person is being intentionally belligerent towards certain groups.

Ergo, in response to your initial question, no, not necessarily. Poor grammar does not make me presume that the individual is stupid. I love grammar, personally speaking. It's actually quite a complex and broad subject, and I would encourage people to study it more- especially if their vocation demands it.

Poor grammar indicates the laziness and careless attitude that is prevelant throughout society today. However, educators must take most of the responsibility for this. Grammar does not seem to be taught in England. I'm an American living in the UK and was amazed at the appalling use of the English language in England!!!

Poor grammar makes a person look uneducated, not stupid. There is a difference.

Yes, I think grammar is getting worse and I hate when people type/write abbreviated words instead of taking the time to write the whole word. Stop being lazy and type/write the words correctly!

I don't think people are "stupid" if they use poor grammar. The schools in our state (Texas) have been forced to concern themselves more with standardized test scores than with any of the "basics" that were once the emphasis, including grammar and spelling. People are not "stupid" for not being taught grammar, just innocently ignorant.

I believe that to some people (especially the ones that have money), do believe that grammar is a indicator of intelligence. Also, sure, there are some people in positions that will use grammar unheard of in the past... at least using Ebonics and whatnot.

For your first question, not necessarily stupid, but lackadaisical.

As far as the use of grammar becoming worse, yes, because so many now build their lives around acronyms - lol, btw, bf, gf - and deliberate misspelling of words like kewl to make them seem with it that they miss out on really thinking about what they are writing (or saying).

It just proves to me that people are not taking their time to write, or they are lazy. It bothers me to no end. I believe grammar is getting worse, and I can't think of anything that is more sad. I mean, GRAMMAR. How easy is it?

it depend how bad the grammar is and in what way they are using it. If there grammar is bad in formal use then that looks bad and maked them look dumb, but if they are chatting on the internet then it is ok because i have a 4.0 and i still don't use period and capitial when i am on the internet. But i do believe it is getting bad altogether because people are getting lazy.
