You might want to try a low-iron formula (but you should check with your pediatrician first), though sometimes the constipation will go away after the baby gets used to the formula. One tip: formula ingredients are regulated by the FDA, so don't feel like you have to buy the most expensive one on the shelf - they all are required to have the same nutritional value, so feel free to save yourself some money!

I did the same thing with my daughter (breast milk and formula). At 6 weeks she was horribly constipated. I called her Dr and her Dr. recommended that I strictly breastfeed. Or just stick with one. The problem with formula (all kinds) for a child so young is that formula is more of a solid food once in their stomach and can have a terrible time digesting. If you can pump and store breast milk and nurse that would be best. After a couple of weeks I just gave my daughter an evening feed of formula so she would still be used to the taste when I went back to work when she was 3 months old.
My suggestion is breastmilk only until she's about 10 weeks (if you can). If you can't Karo Syrup helps the constipation but ask her Dr before you give her any Karo syrup.

Enfamil Lipil. It contains ARA and DHA which helps with eye and brain development. ARA and DHA are also found in breast milk. My son is on Enfamil AR, I tried numerous formulas and finally settled on this one. Similac constipated him. Of course that's something that's going to happen. You just give additional water throughout day. I actually used Pedialyte, my son loved the apple flavor. Enfamil, in my opinion, is the best. Easy to digest. They make many different formulas, try to find one your baby has less trouble with. You can go to the Enfamil web site and get samples. I would recommend talking to your Pediatrician. They often have samples in office that you can try. Slowly introduce new formula, don't want to cause any stomach upset. Try 1 bottle the first day and increase by 1 bottle every day until she's only drinking the new formula. Then monitor for signs of distress. Enfamil Soy (formerly Enfalac Prosobee) or Enfamil Lactose Free (formerly Enfalac Lactofree) may help your fussy or gassy baby. Nutramigen is pretty easy to digest. Try this web site if you like. http://www.enfamil.ca/en/

My baby had torticollis (stiff head and neck) and need physical therapy for it. Because of this, her entire body was stiff and she couldn't keep her formula down. The only formula that worked for me, and I still use it, is Carnation Good Start. It's ground up extra fine and is easier to digest.
As for the constipation, add 1 oz. of Gerber prune juice (my pediatrician told me to do this) to a bottle....your baby will be going, pain free, in no time.

anything with iron will constipate baby.
My daughter was born very constipated and the health nurse came round and told me to boil 3 oz water and dissolve i tsp of brown sugar in it. then let it cool and give it to baby... wait a cpl hours and if it doesnt work do it again...
brown sugar water is a natural stool softener.
I had to feed my baby Isomil soy formula as she was too constipated on everything else.
and ps- babies dont need extra iron in formula till around 4 mos of age.. they already have enough from being in your tummy
hope that helps

My son was the same way so i switched to enfamil but if the problem doesn't go away maybe you should try a soy based formula. Or i used to hold on to my sons feet and push his knees into his stomach gently, that would help to relieve the gas.

If you can handle it try only breastfeeding. It is the best. If you have to use formula I used Carnation Goodstart with DHA and ARA Supreme with iron. Since you are breastfeeding to then try using the soy formula of Carnation. That should help alot.

We have tried a few kinds with our children, and fount it was more the baby's choice with what worked. If having constipation problems, we found that by adding a bit more water to the mix helps thin it out and she was able to digest it better. If your baby is having big problems with it you may want to talk to your doctor.
