Well, I don't even think Tarantino has an answer for that.
Some people say Marcelles Wallace's soul (esp since the code to open it is 666), gold, etc.
Me, I think it was just to make people talk.

As far as I know, this question has never been answered. Some say it's an Oscar, some say it's whatever the person looking at it wants the most. Obviously, a lot of people think it's the soul of marcellus wallace. I heard one theory that the briefcase contains the diamonds that were stolen by the crew in Reservoir dogs...I like John travolta's answer...He said he looked in there, and it was a couple of lightbulbs and a lot of wires.

I heard it is Marcellus's soul, people think this because there is a plaster on the back of his head where apparently you can get peoples soul out from. Also 666 opens the briefcase.

The story has it that the briefcase carries Wallace's soul, not gold. Ther band-aid on his neck was the point where it was extracted and Marsellus wants it back.

The yellow color is a metaphor for a vast amount of money. You know, like a chest full of gold.

I don't know and don't care. It was a stupid movie. It did not have a point and no actual purpose for telling the story out of order the way 'Usual suspects' did.
If the story was told in striaght chronologic order, you would see that is was dumb*** movie.

Marcellus Wallace's soul...it was extracted through the top of his spine, which is why he was shown with the band-aid on his neck.

Quentin Tarantino called it the "epitamy of desire" everyone has something they desire over everything else, so the light is "glory" manifested from whatever the viewer desires, therefore, it's different for everyone - whatever you want it to be.

There has been huge discussions on that, but i believe that QT said that it was the persons soul, thats why it enticed so much.
