Missing/delayed baggage should be reported in person prior to leaving the airport. This notification must take place within 4 hours after the arrival of the flight on which the bag was checked.

For updates on missing/delayed baggage during the first 5 days after the flight call (within the U.S.):

Baggage Customer Service Desk (24 Hours):
1-800-535-5225

If your baggage has been missing for longer than 5 days, write or call:

American Airlines
Central Baggage Service
P. O. Box 619613 MD 1322
DFW Airport, TX 75261-9613
1-800-866-4010 (toll Free U.S. & Canada)
1-972-425-5240 (This is not a toll free number)

Actually it might not have been American Airlines. It could be the (subcontracted?) baggage handlers at your departure, connection, or arrival airports.

Did you immediately file a claim at the airport with American Airlines baggage services when your bag did not turn up?

What normally happens after you file a claim, in almost every case, your bag is hand delivered to you where you are staying. Usually they just put your bag on their next flight, which sometimes means you won't get it until the next day.

If it's been longer than a couple days, consult AA.com for guidance on pursuing compensation.

Best of luck with it.

Well...first you must fill out a claim at the Baggage Service Office. When your bags are located they will be sent to you at the address you advised them of on the form. If you have not recieved your bags and have filled out the form you should have a reference number you can call 1-800-535-5225 to get an update. If you need to purchase clothing or sundry items you will need to get approval for reimbursment before you get your bags back or you might not be reimbursed.

Keep requesting for your bag until you get a satisfactory answer, such as they found it or they pay for it. In most cases they found it.

Call the travel agent that booked your trip and ask them for help. That is what we do. Hope you used a travel agent.
