On almost all cigarettes with filters, there is the darker brown pattern on the paper of the filter end. How did that start, when did that start, what is it supposed to look like?

A cigarette filter has the purpose of reducing the amount of materials harmful to the health like tar and gases in the smoke of a cigarette. Aditionally, the filter makes the smoke somewhat milder, which is why some smokers break it off, in order to obtain a stronger taste.

With classic filter cigarettes, the filter is covered with a cork-colored mouthpiece. Nowadays, some cigarette brands use a white mouth piece, especially those which are oriented to a predominately female target group.

Most factory-made cigarettes are provided with a filter; those who roll their own can buy them in a tobacco store.

The designation, "cork tip" now applies to the brown spotted color of the filter's paper covering. The point is cigarettes taste VERY good when made from these tube.

Filters For Cigarettes

They use to use cork as filter for cigarettes (for those who didn't prefer filterless). When they switched to cotton and cotton-fiber, they wrapped them with cork-patterned paper because smokers were used to seeing the cork. Actually, today there are more plain white wrappings on cigarettes than cork-pattern.

Probably so they can tell which side is which. I'm not certain there's any real 'reason' behind it.
