Tampons are the ideal solution for active girls who play sports and especially swim, and even for other girls they are MUCH more comfortable than pads, they are cleaner than pads, and much more environmentally friendly than pads.
Tampons do not hurt, and they are not at all uncomfortable, though sometimes girls are a little bit uncomfortable with the idea of inserting them at first.
One way to get past your fear of using a tampon, is to become better acquainted with yourself. Some time when you are not on your period, but before your next period, and when you have some time to be alone, take a few minutes to explore and see what the whole area is about. This is something that is essential for any girl.
Get comfortable, use a hand mirror, and with your other hand spread yourself open and look around. It is not dirty, or ugly, or wrong in any way, it is your body, you should know what it is about and how it works. When you are comfortable, slip a finger inside a few inches.
Next time you have a period, you will be ready to give a tampon a try, and will have a good idea what sort of experience to expect. It is different, but it is not bad. Honestly a tampon is WAY better than a pad ever was. Don’t feel bad if you don’t get it quite right the first few times you try it – it can take a bit of practice. Just keep trying until you get it right. When it is right you won’t be able to feel it at all.
Using a tampon with an applicator is easier at first, but I think the OB without the applicator is easier, more comfy to put in, and much better for the environment. You will have to pick for yourself.
Which ever one you get, follow the instructions on the box, and do not leave it in for longer than the instructions say is safe.

Both have advantages and disadvantages. Pads are easier for virgins to use. They're also better when there is an ongoing problem with the vagina such as cadidiasis. They are used after childbirth. Pads often have an odor problem, they can be bulky and can shift and have leakage. Tampons are comfortable, do not have a bulk problem, are small and easy to carry, do not require an adhesive to stay put, do not ususally have an odor problem. They place the wearer at risk for TSS especially with the "super absorbent" types, they can leak on heavy days, they can come out.
Really, the choice is up to you but as soon as I lost my virginity, I switched to tampons.

It depends on your flow. Using tampons you must change often to prevent toxic shock syndrome. Pads you have to make sure you get the right size to prevent the spill. I like pads. But if I go to clubs dancing I wear tampons because when you booty shake you never know what might fall out.

Some people can't use tampons. It all depends on the user. Personally, once I started tampons, I would NEVER go back to pads...ever.

I prefer tampons for my heavier flow days. But I always wear a pad "just in case." I feel cleaner using tampons rather than just pads.

I prefer tampons, it's less messy. I sleep in pads though, in case I sleep over 8 hours (can't wear a tampon over 8 hours).

Omg! Tampons!
Pads are disgusting, smelly and uncomfortable. There is nothing worse than walking into a public restroom and catching that odor! Yuck!

Organic tampons. They're more comfortable, more discrete, more disposable, you can go swimming, nobody will no your wearing them. ----and the organic ones wont give you cancer or endometriosis.
(Curious about this last statement. Do an internet search on Dioxin. It is in tampons, pads, EVEN DIAPERS!!! Can cause all kinds of fertility problems, cancer, endometriosis, etc. . . .) Go tampon or go pad---but definately go organic!!!

Personally I like tampons better. It makes my stomach turn to think about being squishy, dirty and wet for hours. You don't even know that a tampon is there.
