I will be studing The Odyssey, will it help me with a visual aid. Troy did not stick to the Iliad, and I had to turn if off. But The Odyssey is 4 hours long, will it help a little?

I show it to my Classical Civilisation class and it does follow the basic story. Most of the bits are in order and they all follow the basic plot. The best bits are Circe, Calypso and the Suitors Challenge. What it wont help you with is learning about Homer's use of language and story telling as you wont be reading it in his words. He mentions lots of other myths and legends that arent in the film version.
Overall, I thought that the film was really good. It gives you visual help with the way that the book is plotted and helps to flesh out the characters. (PS Cyclops is really funny!).

Just like Tryoy, the movie of the Odyssey had to cut out -alot- of stuff to make it fit in a reasonable time frame. It's good (not as good as Troy), but I can't see it ever bieng a really good study aid.

watching the movie (IMO) is no substitute for reading the book in any case.

Obviously there is a lot more to the book that the movie could ever impart - and any teacher worth their salt will be pretty hip to that.

you should read the book - its quite good.

but if you really wnt to get out of reading it, skip the movie and get the "Coles Notes"

ps. they probably "dumb down"the movie and change names.. so I would skip if I were you.
