He's a seriously disturbed man...I don't believe he's gay, but he has done MANY despicable things in his life.

Phelps earns a law degree from Washburn University in Topeka in 1964, but has trouble joining the state bar when no judges are willing to vouch for his "good character," the normal procedure under Kansas law. Phelps overcomes this obstacle by providing recommendations from others.

Before the end of his legal career in 1989, Phelps will file some 400 suits, mostly in federal court. Estranged son Nathan Phelps will claim later that part of his father's strategy is to file frivolous lawsuits in the hope that his targets will settle to avoid the costs of defense.

Until the mid-1970s, the Phelps family's main income reportedly comes from using his children to sell candy door to door for several hours each day. The children are also required to run several miles a day. Additionally, he stiffs the candy vendors, refusing to pay for the goods his kids sell.

In 1972, his church was sued by two companies for failure to pay. The church is ordered to pay a reported $5,760 in one case; it settles for $1,650 in the other.

In 1974, Phelps files a $50-million class action suit against Sears after a local outlet is several days late delivering a television set. Litigation continues for six years and is eventually settled with Sears paying Phelps $126 — about $60 less than Phelps' son originally paid for the TV, which
he never receives.

Strangely enough, Phelps was a civil rights champion. He sued an area school district winning almost $9,000 for Evelyn Rene Johnson (and over $10,000 in legal fees for himself) to settle a discrimination case.

Another Phelps case results in a settlement for blacks who were illegally searched by police at a party.

In 1986 and 1987, Phelps will receive three awards for his civil rights cases, including one bestowed by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, yet he makes numerous bigoted remarks in public....

"Me Wagnon. Me lots smarter now. Me be Deputy Mayor...This crowd could dumb down the Western Hemisphere."

-- Text surrounding a drawing of a gorilla, "Wagnon's 'Friendlier Topeka,'" WBC flier, June 13, 1997. The named individual is an African-American city council member in Topeka, Kansas

Fred Phelps was disbarred in 1979 by the Kansas Supreme Court, which asserted that he had "little regard for the ethics of his profession."

In 1985, nine Federal court judges filed a disciplinary complaint charging him and six of his family members, all attorneys, with making false accusations against them.

He's antisemetic, a homophobe, a racist and clearly an insane religious zealot....and we thought only Muslims were crazy....

in simple terms because he's an activist doesn't propose he's the devil. I see this a lot. in simple terms because someone has a competent conviction about some thing doesn't unavoidably propose that they are frequently categorized less than such evil. Christians have executed a lot worse issues contained in the call of Christendom than be anti-gay activists.

its because of him and the members of his church that there were protesters at my best friend's funereal. He died last year in November in Iraq. These people go around the country and protest at soldiers funerals because they defend and live in a country that supports gays. If I'm not mistaken they live here too, so does that mean they hate themselves too?
