The earliest time a pregnancy test can determine if one is pregnant is 7-8 days after fertilization of the egg. This is because an egg is fertilized in the uterine tube and takes one week to make it through the tube, implant itself in the uterus, and release enough hormone that can be detected in a woman's urine.

So if a woman had sex and took a home pregnancy test the next day, it would still come back negative even if the egg had been fertilized. Taking the test roughly 8 -11 days after intercourse should give a valid answer (this method might be preferably than waiting for a missed period, especially if the woman has an irregular cycle).

As far as testing goes some tests are accurate from 5 days before your period. As far as feeling pregnant is concerned it is different for everyone. Most of the early signs of pregnancy are a lot like the days before your period. For me the only difference was indigestion.
