This is in response to "tsmitha1".....obviously you have a very small social circle, or they're a bunch of hillbillies who'd rather watch rodeos or NASCAR. I love the NFL too, but how can you not know a single person who watches soccer (football)?? The World Cup is the #1 most viewed thing on television, followed by the Summer Olympics in 2nd place, and the European Cup (also football/soccer) in 3rd. They estimate that there are a couple of billion people worldwide who watch The World Cup....hell, certain business adjust their operating hours just to accomodate watching the matches. Are you trying to tell us that out of the enormous number of World Cup viewers, you don't know a single one....I find that very hard to believe. And in answer to the ?, some of the people that answered are correct, Americans aren't the only ones who call it soccer, and of course the answer is because N. America already has it's own sport which we call football. However, my ? would be, why do we in N. America call our game "football" since as some people already pointed out, we throw or carry the ball most of the game.....that my friends, is the real question ;)

Why does it matter? We already have a game called football. If we change soccer to football we'll have to change football to some other name. Seems like a complete and total waste of time and money to do this because some other country calls the game something else. Hell, the British call elevators lifts. Why don't we change that too?

rOcky74: Who said that the rest of the world should change the name of the game? That has never been said. I can't stand America bashers who have to make up crap to trash this great country. Get a life.

It isn't just Americans. Canadians call it that, too. And our football refers to the NFL/CFL sort of football. Why it is called football, I'll never know. And indoor soccer has a sort of international sounding name, futsal. So, I hope that the world could just use one word for the Beautiful Game.

This game is so beautiful and important to humanity, that it needs more than 1 name: Its called football thru out the world, it's called "soccer" which is a play on words meaning "association football" in america( football is taken by american rugby which is their past time and very popular in american culture). In italy it's call "calcio" which in english would mean "to kick".

All this names seem good to me. Although, americans branded the word "soccer" to football in order to make it sound childish to play, and girls that wanted to play other sports were encouraged to play "soccer" instead. ( OHHH Boy, the americans have it ************!!!)

When we say football, people know what we are talking about. When we say soccer people know what we are talking about. Why change and confuse everyone?

more importantly, why is "American Football" even called "footbal" at all???

- considering the game is mostly about holding and running with the ball, and soccer precludes touching a ball with your hands seems the latter is the TRUE "football"

We already have football, and it is a great sport. Soccer is completely boring, and I know of no one that actually watches it.

IT IS NOT THE ONLY ONE. Australia, Ireland, Canada, and many Caribbean nations also do not say football. Australia and Ireland have their own version of football. Canada plays American football which they call Canadian football

mm well maybe because they are the only country in the whole world that doesn´t like football. Besides that...we are talking about a country where many persons thinks that Panama is a state of Mexico...So...you can´t ask too much.
