I know that this is the TV category, and that TV started becoming a popular thing is people's homes in the early 1950s. It remained black and white until the mid/late 1960s. It used to be powered by large tubes, but now by tiny transistor-type things. There were only about 3 network channels, and 4 or 5 local channels back in the day. Cable, the VCR and DVD players made for huge improvement in the entertainment TVs have to offer.
