I think the book was Alive: the story of the Andes survivors.

The review says the survivors did what was once "unthinkable," but your question made me think of this show I saw recently about tattoos in Siberian prisons. Certain prisoners were (are?) tattooed to indicate that they are "cows." If other prisoners make a break, they take the "cow" along, to eat along the way! eww!

The book is called "Alive : The Story of the Andes Survivors". It was written by Piers Paul Read in 1975. It is still a gripping story.
Nando Parrado, one of the survivors, just wrote a book "Miracle in the Andes". It was published last month.

Alive
I believe they made that into a movie as well, covering the story of the crash in the Andes mountains in Peru and the ensuing story of suvival.
