There are rednecks everywhere, I know. People give AL, MS, LA, TX, GA, FL, TN, SC, NC, and WV a bad rap. They give Arkansas a horrible rep! But, I'm not so sure any of those are as bad as Kentucky (especially east of Shelbyville and Bardstown) and southern Illinois. People still walk around barefooted in Wal-Mart and in the park on any given day in Kentucky.

I am fron Arkansas and I can tell you there are definitely some grade A rednecks here, but nothing like what I've seen in Kentucky and Mississippi.
Rednecks are all over the south.
Hillbillies---Well, Kentucky gets that award too. Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri rank right up there as well.

HEYYYYY!!! I used to live between Shelbyville and Bardstown!!! Seriously! LOL!

Honestly, redneck is a state of mind. There are people everywhere who fit the description. Some just tend to marry and populate the area with more...

We're just the Beverly Hillbillies without the money...

Yes, people walk around barefoot in Kentucky. So?

In case you haven't heard, Wal-Mart has rules---the "no shirt, no shoes, no service" rules just like all retail business in the US. It's protection against civil litigation.

BTW: I'm a Kentuckian. I walk barefoot in my own home; however, I do own shoes and wear them in public. OFTEN! I also have 2 college degrees. I love Kentucky and I am proud to say I am from Kentucky. Does that make me an educated redneck (hillbilly)?

FYI: Hillbilly is a term for people who dwell in remote, rural, mountainous areas. In particular the term refers to residents of Appalachia and later the Ozarks in the United States.

Usage of the term "Hillbilly" generally differs from other terms referring to rural people in the United States in that it can be used for mountain dwelling people anywhere but is generally not used to refer to rural people in non-mountainous areas.

Further, terms like Redneck and Cracker, often connote rejection of, or resistance to assimilation into the dominant culture, while Hicks and Hillbillies theoretically are merely isolated from the dominant culture. Nevertheless, the term is often considered derogatory.

In modern usage, the term redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of individuals living in Appalachia, the Southern United States, the Ozarks, and later the Rocky Mountain States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

My, isn't Wikipedia awesome?

There are no bigger rednecks than in Louisiana. My brother in law ties bricks to himself, goes out into the river, walks the bottom, digs out the huge imbedded catfish, then cuts himself loose and floats to the top. Then sells his catch each day for money. This is how he supports them. Whatever season is in, coon huntin, fishin, deer huntin. Whatever he can sell for cash.

The gravel road to turn of the main road has a REAL fish head on the mailbox guiding the way to my sister's home, which is a double wide on 32 acres in the middle of a cattle field. Yeah, cows graze on her flowers in the flower bed.

In that town, you go to Wal-Mart and, as God is my witness, you find people in hair rollers and house shoes, especially if it is Saturday and Sunday is on the way.

Barefoot in Wal-Mart and the park? Heck, where they live, I don't think shoes exist. Their feet are so tough on the bottom I have seen my nephew step on nails and keep runnin.

Yeah, south LA is the worst.

I would have to put in a vote for Wyoming and the biggest reason being the complete lack of sophistication specifically sorrounding Matthew Shepard and everything that happened because of it. I would aslo like to point out to people that Brokeback Montain is an unrealistic representaion of most western states. Also want to point out that Wyoming also has barefoot Walmart shoppers.

ok, i'm from southern Illinois. I ought to tell you there are various rednecks right here. even however, I even have been places that are some distance worse. Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee are lots worse than southern Illinois. i assume it kinda relies upon on your definition of a redneck. what's incorrect with strolling around interior the park barefoot? i admire the way grass feels on my ft.

Hillbillies now only exist in the Ozarks. People of all races have walked barefooted. What do people in Kentucky wear on their feet when they go to the beach? Barefooted, right?

One interesting thing that sort of supports your claim (perhaps "supports" is too strong a word) about Kentucky is that no other state has so many people who identify as "American." (look at the Wikipedia map I linked to) Using this map, we could guess that Tennessee would be next, followed by West Virginia. About half of Arkansas identifies as "American" as well.

I mean, the census-takers were asking them about their ancestry, but it's still interesting that they would respond that way.

I see nothing wrong with rednecks, they don't let no one push them around!! So, what if some of them don't wear shoes, they don't care to get dirty feet. At least they stand up for what they believe in!! Come to FL. and see all the bare feets, everywhere.
