it depends on how bad the hyperextension was....you posted this 4 days ago, so im hoping its better. you should be icing, and staying off it as much as possible. maybe an advil for the pain. if it hasnt gotten better, go to the doctor. you may need surgery, based on the extent of the injury. my sister tore her PCL by hyperextending her knee when she was a freshman in high school (i think). she went through 2 surgeries and still competed until her 2nd year on COLLEGE, only taking off 1 season of competing. my advice to you is to keep doing it if you love the sport. you cant think of the 'what if i do it again?' because youll get no where in life. just think about it...if you play tennis, you still run the risk of spraining an ankle or something while running for the ball. you may just need to start off slowly to work up confidence in yourself. if you do decide to go back, and dont enjoy the sport (not the fear factor) then you can quit...but you dont want to stop because youre scared...youll probably regret not trying it again. anyway, good luck to you.

By now you should have had numerous injuries to your joints and muscles from your Gymnastic's program. You should see a qualified specialist in Sports Medicine. You may have done serious damage to your knee and then again it may be only a sprain or something less a strain. However, joints are very important, and they need to be cared for in a judicious manner. If the knee is swollen, and tender, then see a physician as mentioned above. In the meantime put ice packs on the affected knee and take anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the pain, ie. aleve or ibuprofen, as directed on the bottle.

i found this about the knee sorry couldnt help that much
A.Hyperextended knee refers to an injury in which the knee is forced beyond its normal fully straightened position. This position forces the lower leg excessively forward in relation to the upper leg. Hyperextension of the knee often occurs as a result of an awkward landing after a jump or from a contact injury to the lower leg. It is a common injury in jumping or leaping sports, such as gymnastics, basketball and some types of dance.
Treatment of hyperextended knee depends on the severity of the injury. Sometimes the damage is relatively minor, with pain and swelling when you try to extend your knee. But a hyperextended knee may also lead to a partial or complete ligament tear, especially in your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). An injury severe enough to cause knee joint swelling, instability, impaired motion or pain should be evaluated by a doctor.
A doctor can evaluate the injury by:
Medical history
Physical examination of the knee
X-rays of the knee
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
Treatment may include:
Applying ice to the knee immediately after the injury
Rest
Over-the-counter pain relievers, such acetaminophen or anti-inflammatory medications
Physical therapy
Surgery

Hyperextension isn't something that occurs like an injury, i.e you can't walk into the doctor's and say "I hyperextended my knee" I can hyperextend my knees (which means past the angle that they usually extent to) as I am double jointed. You may have pulled/torn something, you should go to a physio or a doctor to get it checked out, especially seeing as it's been over a week.

Well you should go to the doctor as soon as possible. Until them you could try heat packs or ice packs (on 15 minutes, off 15 minutes) Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen
Good Luck :)

Maybe in a couple weeks it will be better. You could always go to physical therapy. If you go, get shock therapy. It doesn't actually shock you! It massages where the pain is.
