A homeless person can be anyone or a family, going through difficult times, through job loss, death of a spouse(the breadwinner), an abused family member, or neglected young teen who has no choice but to leave home, or apartment converted to condos, etc.The singer Jewel was once homeless and she and her mother lived in their car. In most cases, you would not be able to identify a homeless person (or family) if you passed them on the street.

I agree with the first answer.. never give them money.. there are other ways to help.. offer food or clothing.. or a blanket in the wintertime.. if they accept it with a smile, you have brought a small bit of comfort to their day..
If they refuse.. chances are they are not homeless.
I think there are a lot of homeless people out there that have run out of options and would choose any other life.. everybody sneers at and heckles them to get a job or get a life or get out of the way and off of the side walk or park benches.. out of sight out of mind?
But, what if they have a mental illness and can't hold a job? There are lots of reasons .. minimum wage is a pathetic 5 bucks an hour.. even with a 40 hour work week. they could have the choice of food and clothes .. or a room in a shady flophouse .. one or the other.. but not both. Put yourselves in their shoes for a second.. it isn't much fun. Why would anybody CHOOSE that way of life? I always offer something, even if it is just a candy bar. I have given my jacket to a shivering woman. She was standing in a snowstorm without shoes on. A true homeless person would never say no.

A homeless person would obviously be someone without a home. I don't see how you could possibly be sure if someone is homeless or not without asking them. Based on looks alone. The person may just be poor, or perhaps they've no interest in clothing accept as a means to keep warm. Perhaps they are an angel just trying to see if we might find it our heart to help them. Maybe if you just struck up a conversation, you might meet someone really amazing.

A homeless person is a person with no permanent legal domicile.
There is no way to tell if a person is homeless by looking at him.

i live in a smaller community. lots of homeless people here living in shelters. many dont ask for handouts from strangers, they r too embarassed. i think in larger cities like D.C. a lot of people r beggers just for a free handout. that doesnt make em homeless.

there are times you could tell but then there are also times you cant... i used to know a boy and he looked mad fresh, clean and everything but then we found he was homeless and just shower at peoples houses or wash up in public bathrooms.

I am not homeless, I'm residentally challenged.
If you know what to look for, from experience, I could tell.
