Sound travels easier the denser its medium. Sound traveling through the air loses more of its intensity than if it was traveling through water or a solid object.
Try this: find a long table and start tapping on it very lightly. Have a friend at the other end of table listen for the tapping with head away from table. Then, have friend put ear on the table and listen. Friend will hear a huge differece between the two.
Same concept the Native Americans use. Using this method one can hear horses from the ground long before hearing them from the air.
The word you are looking for to fill in the blank is: dense.

Vibrations!
Two tourists were out riding horses in the desert near Phoenix, AZ. They came upon an Indian man, laying in the road with his ear to the ground. "What are you doing?" one tourist asked the Indian. The Indian replied, "Fast car on this road. Big car. A red convertable. Two people in it. Blonde woman with huge hooters driving. Going west very fast." Amazed, the tourists asked, "That's fantastic! You can tell all that from listening to the vibrations from the ground?" "No," said the Indian, "car ran me over."

You can hear the vibrations and feel them in the ground. If you lay down on the ground and something steps down on the earth with enough force to equal a horse you can hear the vibrations and feel them.

I'll ask around the reservation, but I don't think too many Indians do that anymore. I for one never have. Once put my ear to the door to hear if my parents were still in the living room...
