Since Ellen came out in the late 90's everyones saying they are gay. And it seems to be a lot of people are doing that just do do it. not cuz they are born any different.
When I think of a fad, I think "hmm.. let me try this shirt on"
not "let me sleep with another dude.

Being gay is definitly trendy in a way. Gay men on TV are always the respectable, well-dressed, well-spoken, rich, and attractive men while the straight guys are not.
The gay community reports that 10% of the population is gay. Some studies have been done to report that, however there were some heavy biases in the ones that I've read.
I believe that it's 1-2% of the population. However, within that group I think the majority have gone that way due to external pressures, troubles with the opposite sex, disfunctional familial relationships, molestations and abuse, etc. I think about 10% of the gay population is gay for an unexplainable reason. The other 90% are gay because of previous life experiences or choices.
Just my opinion.

To add to Wendy's succinct comment, it has been said that 10 -15% of the world population is homosexual. However, due to stigma and persecution, this number is likely much higher. The last statement ("When I think of a fad, I think 'hmm.. let me try this shirt on' not 'let me sleep with another dude'"), actually supports the opposite argument than the writer intended. The reality is sexuality is a continuum with the extremes being hetero and homo. All humans are somewhere along this continuum, some more to the ends than others; some more towards the ambiguous center. There is more acceptance of this (with shows like "Ellen") and it is getting more press. This does not mean that Ellen is the cause of people deciding to try a gay life-style for fun. An individual will pursue only that which they are despite the environment they are within. If you're hetero, you will stay that way. If you have other tendencies, it is these that will dictate your wants and behaviors.

There is no 'Gay/Not Gay' switch on people's backs...
I think experimentation is one thing, but to full out claim that you are Gay is completely different. I think you are seeing the effect of acceptance in society. (whether you agree or not)
It's hard enough to find love in the world, so who cares if it's with a man or woman??? Live and let live I say.
I see myself as straight by the way, so take this as an informed opinion, instead of a backlash type of response. I have many gay friends who combat this kind of ignorance every day. They are just people, so give them a chance!

Interesting observation... hmmm... homosexuality, which has existed in EVERY society since the beginning of recorded history in roughly the same percentages of the population, is a fad.
Could it be that gays and lesbians suddenly have chosen to speak up and have a cultural and societal voice?
I guess you assume the late 60's, early 70's emergence of black consciousness was a fad???
How egocentric, self-centered and myopic.

It's not a fad, as gays and lesbians have been around as long as human beings have been around, but the number is usually overstated at 10%, when it is more like 3-4% of the population.

Homosexuality has been going on since recorded history. The reason more people are "coming out" is because society is progressing, and people feel safer to be who they are. It's here to stay and is not a "fad". Just put away those disco shoes.
