Oil Filters are vehicle specific parts. Certain filters are interchangeable, however most are not. Every filter has a certain thread pitch, if you cross-thread the spin-on point, you may have to spend several hundred dollars addressing this issue just trying to save a few bucks. Most of the time, these filters also regulate back-pressure. So they most certainly are NOT universal. I hope you don't find out the hard way.

Are oil filters a universal fit?
will most oil filters fit on any car, or do you need a specific type for your vehicle?

Big debate, The oiled air filter does cause problems with some vehicles equipped with a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. It can cover the sensing portion with oil and dirt. This can cause the sensor to malfunction and increase emissions and potentially damage the catalyst. I am a K&N fan for high performance high flow filter systems for off-road. The engines are rebuilt nearly every other run (50-100 miles). The damage that may occur if the filter allows too much dirt to pass will be internal in the engine and could cause premature failure of the piston rings, cylinders and bearings. It's buyer beware and now you've been given some facts. Check the specs of the K&N against the OEM as far as the size of particulates allowed. (# of microns)

The oiled gauze air filter is nothing new, they were fitting them to production cars in the fifties as standard . I don't know why paper elements became so widespread, but it certainly created a market for paper filters that had to be thrown away every few thousand miles. They were cleaned in petrol and reoiled quite easily . They do work quite well increasing the air rate in the induction system. The downside that I found with mine was that it was impossible to connect the warm air intake system to it so more petrol was wasted on short journeys with the engine taking longer to warm up.

You need to know the year, make, model and engine that your car has in order to get the oil filter required for it. Just buying any old oil filter is not going to work.

You need a certain size for your vehicle. You can find out your vehicle's size when you go to the auto parts store. You can ask the parts counter or look it up yourself in a book that should be supplied near the oil filters.

I believe you need a specific size, but if you go to a VIP or Auto Parts store they should be able to tell you exactly which one.

No, but some engines can take bigger filters..... as long as they will fit.... they will be fine.
Usually napa can cross reference it for you.. Just don't use the cheap and overpriced made frams.
