If you have an internet connection, you can connect via ethernet cable. If you want to go wireless, the new MacBooks have it built in, but you need to get an Apple Airport router. Once you do that, scan for the connection via your laptop. Pretty easy, actually.

your macbook came with Airport Extreme built in but this is basically just a receiver. say, you went to a coffee shop that offered WiFi, your Macbook would automatically recognize this and ask you if you wanted to join. to get it in your home you have to have an IP, a modem, and a WiFi device.
