If your brother spends a lot of time on the internet, using the computer for his needs, and not letting anyone else on it. Then say to your mom, that buying a laptop, even a cheap one, and a router, that will allow him to be on the laptop doing his thing and someone else on the main computer. Also, with a router, you are able to limit the time he spends on the internet, what time he can get on the internet, and even what sites he gets on, all of which can be blocks be a password for only the parents knowing. Wireless home networks can be great safety tools if they are used right.

Laptops cost roughly over $1,000 new. And for a 12 year old? I can see why your parents would say no. That's along the same lines as why spend $50 a month giving your child, who is 7 by the way, a cell phone worth about $200.
I don't think you'll be able to convince your parents to invest $1,000 into a toy for a 12 year old. Now if you can convince them to get a "family" computer for a decent price that the whole family can share....then they may side with you on that.

Hope to find a free laptop like I did. I had to buy a $40 power adapter and $20 PCMCIA wireless card...so for $60 - decent laptop. Great graphics tho? Pfft. Not from a 433 Mhz machine. But it works for essays, wireless internet, and all my standard browsing and instant messaging stuff. Fact of the matter is when you don't have the money, you settle for less.

12 is too young, the product will break in 2 days. Try Scholastic, Mattel, or Tyco instead.
A laptop is usually about $599, thats not a cheap toy for someone under 21. Its not a TV set, or radio. If its college supplies its college supplies, if it was a parents work item that is so.

Tell your mom its important for studies. You may try asking your teacher to recommend it. She will never say no! Also you may wait till your birthdays. If all else fails than one day give her breakfast in bed, help her with chores all day, and at night make a casual request for a laptop.
