Between 1997 and 2003] crimes with [banned firearms] have more than doubled.... In 2002, for the fourth consecutive year, gun crime in England and Wales rose — by 35 percent for all firearms, and by a whopping 46 percent for the banned handguns. Nearly 10,000 firearms offenses were committed....

Clearly since the ban criminals have not found it difficult to get guns and the balance has not shifted in the interest of public safety....

In the four years from 1997 to 2001 the rate of violent crime more than doubled. The UK murder rate for 2002 was the highest for a century....

A recent study of all the countries of western Europe has found that in 2001 Britain had the worst record for killings, violence and burglary, and its citizens had one of the highest risks in the industrialized world of becoming victims of crime....

Because crime rates are incredibly lower in countries with stricter gun control, especially violent crime.

Edit: In the UK they had a violent crime rate in 2004-5 of 224 crimes per 10,000. In the US we had a violent crime rate of 4655 per 10,000 in 2004. Which place would you feel safer in?

The availabilty of a weapon is enough on it's own to raise the death rate.

People who so say pull knives to protect themselves often use them when goaded but not threatened. Husbands and wives point guns and threaten in arguaments and worst in drunken arguments and then the gun gets used. If the guns and the knives are not present the worse that happens is usually bruises.

The reason gun deaths are so high in the USA is not just the availability of weapons but the unreasoned resistance to sensible debate about how to control the situation.

Why is it that wherever you go in the world all the TV and film violence is based on murders and robberies in the USA? There is no other country in the world that condones such a high death rate through gunn crime. America makes the old head hunting tribes look totally civilised.

Failure to hold a sensible debate will eventually lead to mandatory controls. Look at Britain where pistols have been banned altogether! Sure it was a complete over reaction by the government to an horrendous crime but America seems to experience school and business massacres on a regular basis.

Do Americans really think so little of human life? I think not.

Do you not think it is time to have a sensible debate about the issue. If not perhaps you aught to ask yourself which member of your family you would consider it worth allowing to die at the behest of some gunman just so the gunlaw does not change!

Or do you perhaps think it only happens to others? I really do hope you never find out how stupid that line of thought can be!

You said that the crime rate rose after stricter gun controls were brought in for Australia. Where do you get such a statistic???

How many people are killed each year by guns owned by lawful citizens? (Even if they did not pull the trigger.) If the answer is one. You have just found an example of an avoidable death.

Its a fact, It does not work. Here in Florida, when Concealed weapon law was passed, Everyone said the crime rate would skyrocket. It actually went down. If you unarm your citizens, then the criminals will no longer be afraid to commit a crime.

Because half the liberals are stupid enough to think that if guns were outlawed, criminals would say, "Aw, shucks! I have to turn my (illegal) gun in!" instead of taking advantage of the fact that citizens have no way to protect themselves.

The other half worry themselves sick over the rights of criminals, and would much rather see an innocent woman raped in her home or a family murdered than see the criminal who broke in shot down by the homeowner.

No, it wont happen. I have firearms, and I have no intention of using them on another human being unless absolutely nessesary. Like the saying goes, guns dont' kill people, stupid people with guns kill people.

lawful citizens could get guns stolen from them by criminals who would use them to increase the crime rate
