Unfortunately, everybody talks about other people. It all depends on how mean-spirited it is. Gossip can be fun as long as it doesn't hurt someone.

The best thing you can do is to ignore some of this. If it is becoming extrememly painful for you to stay around them then you will have to talk to new people. How to do that in summer? Attend an event with your friends where there are other people and talk to them. You may have to do this several times to start to make contacts. Then if you make plans with the new people you meet, do not invite the old friends along. It also keeps you busy not listening to their gossip. Join a school club or another organization. Another way to handle some of it is to respond as if you are not even bothered by it. If you do not give them the satisfaction of "getting" you, then they will give up attempting that. Most people outgrow this backstabbing behavior as they become adults, especially after highschool when they all go their separate ways. At that time they are all starting over trying to make new friends. When you make a new friend ask yourself, would I want to be friends with this person in five years from now.

I once knew a backstabber-- as a result of her viscious tongue we are no longer mates. I won't have anyone saying stuff about me behind my back and will always challenge that person until i get the truth.
'Treat a person how u expect to be treated' thats what i was always brought up to believe and i stick by it 100% so if your so called friends wanna **** stir about others let them do it-- you dont need crap inya life-- it's too short. Go out and find others

The only thing I can tell you is what I used to tell my daughter when she was your age. " You will have alot of aquaintances and they may seem like true friends, but they really aren't. Have fun with them, hang out etc. but be very, very careful what you say to them. Never tell anyone anything that you wouldn't want published in the local newspaper. If you have ONE good, true friend, consider yourself lucky. It takes time to know one another and begin the trust of true friendship. When it happens, that is the one and only friend to confide in because you can trust them and that is what friendship is built up on. All the other's are friends in a sense but NOT true friends." Make sense??

Go to new places. You must have at least 1 or 2 nice friends that you can discover new places with. Try social clubs, take up new sports, etc.
You are right to dump those frenemies though!
Good luck.

I'm afraid than it does not get any better as you get older. Your learn that alot of people are just out for them selves. It's very rare to find a true friend, and when you do, grab on with both arms. I'm sad to say i trust no one, i learned the hard way. best way to keep a secret - keep it to yourself!
