I'm sure everyone's felt that pain in their chest when something horrible happens in your life, like being dumped by your true love, or someone in your life dies. But I'm sure everyone has also felt that light feeling you get when everything in your life is going right and everything is making you smile and be happy. My question is, what exactly are we feeling when our "heart breaks"? and also what is it we're feeling when we're extremely happy?

I'm not sure about the happpiness part, but I did find something on heartbreak.

Heartbreaks could be Stress cardiomyopathy, also known as the Broken Heart Syndrome. It's when extreme emotional or physical stress causes heart muscles to weaken. The weakening of these heart muscles causes the heart to pump weaker, which causes symptoms such as chest pain, trouble with breathing, low blood pressure, so on.

Why does stress cause Stress Cardiomyopathy? When you're stressed, your body produces hormones and proteins to destroy the stress. In Stress Cardiomyopathy, the heart is overwhelmed with the proteins and hormones.

It is amazing how our emotions affect what we feel physically. Or vice versa if we are feeling good, how this affects our mood and feelings. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what is happening when we are "heart breaks" or when were "joyful". It is a coordination sometimes of hormones which then sends signals to the brain and heart - just as when we are frightened.. hormones occur that increase our heart rate and sharpen our senses to protect ourselves. You have heard of the fight or flight response? Similar things happen when we encounter strong emotions.. our brain has hormones that are sent out to increase our heart rate make our skin feel warm and opens our blood vessels. Also, when our heart breaks.. there is a hormonal response that increase our heart rate perhaps constricts the blood vessels and sends messages to our eyes to cry... It is amazing what our brain perceives and how it so seemlessly coordinates the multitude of messages that make us so singularly human.. also, what each person perceives when we have these sensations - is as different as there are people on this earth. I am truly grateful to be a human being instead of any other creature on this earth.. hope this helps answer your question.

"Heartbreaks" are very similar to the withdrawal symptoms felt by alchoholics and drug users. In fact, you were "addicted" to the person you lost from a physiological standpoint.

Same with the "high". just like drugs.
