If by "We", you mean the citizens of Vatican City, the answer is pretty obvious.

It is an unfortunate believe that Christians are the only ones with morals. I would like to believe that leaders are elected based upon their abilities. The problem is, as you can read above, there is a believe that society is now somehow morally corrupt. Things were so much better 50 or 100 years ago or at least that's what we are told. History is full of Christian leaders, who with their morals, killed people for believing in a different religion, the Spanish Inquisition is a perfect example. Until a time comes when the true character of any leader can be seen, regardless of religion, democracy will continue to be only an experiment in government.
Finally, to answer your question, Christian leaders continue to be elected because of their perceived stranglehold on what is right and what is wrong, despite the fact that this basic assumption is flawed.

A Christian leader would provide more integrity in government. In Canada Prime Minister Harper is developing accountability legal procedures to deal with how contracts and money management is handled by bureaucratic officials. He's also eliminating or downsizing money wasting departments that have shown no real value in the long term. For example the gun registry has not deterred gangs from shooting whenever and where ever they are and still killing innocent people. Gun legislation only controls the honest people. A Christian leader will be more compassionate and sympathetic with the commitment and resources needed to raise a family as children are our future. On and on it goes. We don't need laxer laws we need a safer country to live and criminals shouldn't be let out on parole when they'll just kill and offend again.

More people respect Christian leaders I suppose. If they weren't Christian, there's a chance that the public will be disapointed. I'm not religious, and personally don't care what religion my leader is from, but others might. Especially the people who are 40 years of age and up, because back in the day more people were brought up under the Christian religion.

Most people believe that America needs a Christian leader because they want the person in the highest position of power to share the same beliefs and values that they do. Actually, they want ANYONE in any position of power to share the same beliefs as them so that those people most likely make the decisions that they would agree with.

Christianity doesn't necessarily mean ethics and morals. I don't think we should choose a leader based on religion. The only ones that say we need a christian leader are... well the christian. If you asked a catholic what religion would he want the leader to be he would say catholic. You ask a muslim the same question, and he would say muslim. You ask a hindu the same question and he would say hindu. So people don't think we should have a christian leader. Christians think we should have a Christian leader, that's their religion and they wanna see it in power.

Because most people in the US are Christian (see sources below) and they think that voting for a Christian is the only way to see their morals and values implemented on a nationwide scale. They want people who lead them to be like them.
I can understand the impulse, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to point out that people who are non-Christian can be just as moral, if not more so (think about Catholic priests for a second) than followers of the Christian faith. It's also technically illegal to implement one religion's morals and values on a nationwide scale, but people don't let things like the constitution stop them.

Maybe it will give us some direction for the good. When we as a people stray from the norm (what ever someone thinks is norm) we have many rough issues to deal with. I believe that if I keep my mind on good thoughts and my beliefs in God that I will be a better person. Plus that is a way for me to keep the stress and other issues away from me directly and can give the issues I can't handle to a higher power.

Because they're radical fools!
Not only that, it completely obliterates the constitution! A constitution that has guaranteed the liberties of those very Christians who can't see beyond their noses!
Having a Christian leader would certainly lead to the very reason our forefathers broke away from British religious oppression to begin with!
Having the separation of church and state exists in the constitution for a real reason, you stupid christian fundamentalists!

That way the president will have the personal phone number to all of the Christian televangelists.
Bushes "red phone" is a direct line to Jerry Fallwell.
Clintons was a direct line to Louis Farrakhan.

Unfortunately, Christianity is the only religion which is the least rigid, has very less conditions compared to it's other counterparts. (Well, after Martin Luther brought the Protestanianism i.e.) So, we really COOL. Therefore we think we need somebody to guide us. You know like show us the WAY !!!
