u can get stuff onto the ipod from any pc but you cannot transfer from ipod to pc. unless the music is already on the pc. I've got stuff on my ipod which I have deleted from my computer. Now I can't transfer it back onto the computer to put it on my new ipod.

Actually, it's not illegal if it's music that you paid for, or if it's music that came from your own CD collection. It simply is not a function that is supported by Apple.

There are a number of third party software programs that will allow you to "rescue" your music from your ipod and put it back on your computer. Do a google search on "transfer music ipod", and you should find the link you are looking for within the first page of results. Good luck!

The IPOD is a greedy little beast, isn't it. Takes and never gives back.

Here is everything you need to know to move things from the ipod to a PC:

It's not very difficult, and CNET gives you ten steps to follow, which I managed without any problem. Have fun.

I tried that and it does not seem to work well. Your best bet is to download the ipod music to itunes. Itunes does format it strangely, so if you want to take the music and burn it to a cd or something, you will have to find a free converter. Download.com is your best bet for that.

there is freeware on Apple.com. i am not sure if it runs on a PC but it treats your iPod like an external drive and you can copy music folders onto your HD. This is illegal, however!
