I think caps are tossed just as a tradition, but for some schools , it sybolizes a freedom from the troubles and worries..or even as a show of hard work and success on most parts...

We weren't allowed to throw ours as in some previous year, someone got hit in the eye by one of them and it did some permanent damage.... :(
