This is the first time in growing any kind of anything. My Bottle Gourds start out fine but before they start to really develope good, they either turn yellow and fall off or turn Black! and die.

The vines look healthy - and I water them everyday. I mixed potting soil with barn dirt to counter our sandy soil. I even treat them with "Miracle Grow". What is the problem?

I have not noticed any harmful insects on the vines . Just a few really small ants.

I have them planted in the ground - and run strings in zig-zag fashion up between two trees.

Could be overwatering. It sounds like they have a fungus, or a type of rot. Hold back on the watering to every third day or so. Even better yet, dont water til the leaves start to wilt. The plant will let you know when it is thirsty.
Good luck.

Could it be that the sandy soil u have has a high concentration of salt? If u have the plant in the pot, u might want to leach it, just run the hose in the base of the plant and set the water to moderate for a few minutes so it'll run through the bottom, then turn it off. That should help. If it doesn't go to a local Home Depot or OSH hardware and check their garden book, they might have a better solution. Hope this helps.

What the Bible says about Figs
(God hates them.)

He smote ... their fig trees.

Jeremiah 24:2-3
The other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

Jeremiah 29:17-18
Thus sayeth the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will ... make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

Hosea 2:12
I will destroy her vines and her fig trees.

Matthew 21:19
Andwhen he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

Mark 11:13-14, 20
And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. ... And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

I have been growing gourds for years and believe it or not I never water mine and they do fine. It could be the sand in the soil but I am not sure. Mine usually turn black when they are dried.
