yeah we all fell into that one except a couple of folk. Oops!

Lanarkshire, when it existed, was a huge county that took in a whole swathe of land south of the Clyde. But I doubt that it covered the whole of Glasgow - some bits were Dumbartonshire, some Renfrewshire etc. I could be wrong about that. All the counties now abolished so it's City of Glasgow.

County Of Glasgow

For the purpose of police and fire and rescue it's in strathclyde, it has its own council, and for tourist board purposes (i.e. www.visitscotland.com) it belongs to Greater Glasgow & The Clyde Valley
but usually when I have seen an area on a letter or when i have had to put the area in sometimes it is either lanarkshire or Glasgow,

Lanarkshire was formerly a county of Scotland.
In 1975 the county council was superseded by the Strathclyde region, which itself was superseded by unitary authorities in 1996. Lanarkshire is now covered by the council areas of North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, and the City of Glasgow.
Although the counties themselves no longer fulfil any administrative function, the boundaries of the majority remain in use by the Scottish Land Register as the registration counties - the only differences being that Glasgow forms a separate county from Lanarkshire

Glasgow is it's own Unitary Authority. The historic counties were subdivided as part of a government admnitration reshaping and the 'old' counties of Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire were subdivided (South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire etc.) but Glasgow was put into it's own Unitary Authority.

The City of Glasgow is in STRATHCLYDE. I live in Glasgow North West, before lived in the South of Glasgow and all letters came and still come (from council and other departments) with Strathclyde county. More over, if you still don't believe, look at BBC weather page http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2648579.

I was the same confused about the counties when I had to give the address and to write a county was a must, so now I know definitely - this year - in 2014 - it's in Strathclyde. (On the river Clyde :) )

Lanarkshire, when it existed, was a huge county that took in a whole swathe of land south of the Clyde, so most likely Glasgow would have been within that. All the counties now abolished so it's City of Glasgow.
