"The two traditional symbols of England are the St. George's cross (the English flag) and the Three Lions coat of arms (see above), both derived from the great Norman powers that formed the monarchy – the Cross of Aquitaine and the Lions of Anjou. The three lions were first definitely used by Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) in the late 12th century (although it is also possible that Henry I may have bestowed it on his son Henry before then). Historian Simon Schama has argued that the Three Lions are the true symbol of England because the English throne descended down the Angevin line."

Despite their close association with England, the appearance of lions on coats of arms was originally derived from the House of Normandy, which arrived in England in the form of William the Conqueror in 1066.
The number of lions varied initially between the Norman pair, and the single splendid golden beast on a red ground adopted by Henry II in 1158. When Richard I (known to history as the Lionheart) came to the throne in 1189, the emblem was revised again to depict not one but three majestic creatures.
The lions are shown in the position known in heraldry as “rampant” (which is rather how we hope the England team will be at the World Cup).
On the national football logo, which dates back to Victorian times, the three dark blue snarling beasts are interspersed with ten red-and-white English roses. The three lions also appear on the badge of the England cricket team

The three Lions mean at least three of the Monarchs are related to King David of the tribe of Judah, the lineage going back through Robert the Bruce, back through the trojan kings, to David. Most of the Monarchs are also related to the tribe of Naphtali. Including the present Queen.
