Guantánamo Bay (Spanish: Bahía de Guantánamo) is a bay located in Guantánamo Province at the south-eastern end of Cuba (19°54′N 75°9′W).

The southern portion of the bay is surrounded by the United States Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, a naval base established in 1898. Recently, the base has begun to host a detainment camp for militant combatants collected from both Afghanistan and Iraq. The Guantánamo Bay detainment camp—in fact, even the U.S. presence in Guantánamo—is against the will of the Cuban government and considered by it to be an illegal occupation of the area. The Cuban government strongly denounces the treaty on grounds that it violates article 52 of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. However, this article declares a treaty void only if its conclusion has been procured by the threat or use of force in violation of international law (see below). While the United States may have applied political pressure to Cuba in 1903, there was no use of force or the threat of its use.

The camp has drawn strong criticism world-wide for its detainment of prisoners without trial, (although prisoners of war are not generally entitled to judicial review of their detention) and allegations of torture. Many detainees are held by the United States to be illegal combatants, and thus not entitled to the protections of the Geneva Convention.

Physical conditions for detainees at Camp Delta meet basic standards for maintaining health, prisoners are held in small, mesh-sided cells with little privacy, and lights are kept on day and night. Detainees are said to have rations similar to American forces, with consideration for Muslim dietary needs. James Yee, a Muslim chaplain from the United States Army, provided religious services, but has now resigned after unproven allegations were brought against him by the United States, following his tour of duty at Guantánamo Bay. These charges include sedition, aiding the enemy, espionage — although it was never declared on whose behalf, and failure to obey a general order. He was then transferred to a United States Navy brig in Charleston, South Carolina. Later, the charges were dropped. He states that he resigned because no apology was given, nor was there an acknowledgement of error by the United States.[citation needed]

Detainees are kept in isolation most of the day, are blindfolded when moving into Camp Delta and from place to place within the camp, and forbidden to talk in groups of more than three. American doctrine in dealing with prisoners of war state that isolation and silence are effective means in breaking down the will to resist interrogation. There have been allegations of torture, including sleep deprivation, the use of so-called truth drugs, beatings, locking in confined and cold cells, and being forced to maintain uncomfortable postures. It has been alleged that SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) program's chief psychologist, Colonel Morgan Banks, issued guidance in early 2003 for the behavioral science consultants who helped to devise Guantánamo's interrogation strategy. SERE is a program based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Guantanamo Bay is an American Navy base on Cuba. At this time it is a prison for SUSPECTED terrorists. There are some people that have been there for a while now and haven't been charged with anything. It is true that there are some actual terrorists there but not all of them are. Most are under suspicion but like I said haven't been charged. Amnesty International has a problem with Guantanamo because were are keeping people under indefinite detention which violates International law. Things are so bad down there that there have been many reports of suicides and attempted suicides. A made for tv movie has been made in the U.K called "The Road to Gunatanamo" which talks about the experiences of 3 people being held prisoner for no reason.

The prison at Guantanamo Bay is being ran by professional military people who give the prisoners better treatment than they really deserve. They receive better meals than the soldiers get, are allowed time for exercise. These Islamic Fascists just got caught that's all. Claim's of abuse are greatly exaggerated.

Amnesty International has a problem with the fact that we have sent the nastiest Terrorists Prisoners over there not to mention the fact these Terrorists who deserve to be shot to death are getting better than our own Troops.

Heck they even eat better than people held in regular American Prisons.

Prisoners of war are afforded protections by the Geneva Conventions. The US is denying prisoners taken in the "war on terra" these rights by calling them "enemy combatants" instead. It has nothing to do with American laws and justice. It is international law that is being disregarded.

Liberals want to give enemy combatants removed for the battlefield the same right as American citizens. Why should someone who hates America and her laws be afforded the very rights he was trying to destroy? Liberals have a mental disorder that jeopardizes the security of America.
