Well if you are directly quoting someone then I wouldn't change it. If you wanted to re-write it you could write it as:

The article about American history stated, “ As a result of a beer during prohibition, the revolution began, and ended, with a bang."

Typically square brackets are used by an author to interject into a direct quote to give some clarification that is needed by the reader to better understand the quote. Whatever is in the square bracket is the words of the author, and not from the original source being quoted.
For example the following is a direct quote:

``Authorities in the U.S. have indicted seven people they suspect were plotting to attack the Sears Tower [a famous landmark in Chicago]``

I have added extra information in square brackets to help the reader understand what the Sears Tower is and where it`s located. The information inside the square brackets was not part of the original quote, but added by me.

So technically your sentence is only wrong if the information in the square brackets was not part of the original quote.

Hope that helps.

Well, as is the sentence doesn't make much sense.

Improvement:

The revolution began with a Prohibition-era beer and ended with a bang.

Thos ebrackets are to be used within perenthesis (_) like a sub-side quote, know what I mean? Here's an example:

I went to the store (to buy candy [loli pop] for my sis) and fell on the way.

I believe that's the correct way to use them.
