Christopher Latham Sholes and his colleagues, Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soulé, invented the first practical typewriting machine in 1866.
The type-bar system and the universal keyboard were the machine’s novelty, but the keys jammed easily. To solve the jamming problem, another business associate, James Densmore, suggested splitting up keys for letters commonly used together to slow down typing. This became today’s standard "QWERTY" keyboard.

my teacher once told us because back in the day, they used type writers instead of computers, and they were in alphabatical order, but the keys would get stuck whenver they type. so then they changed it to the current order on keyboards. so when computers came out, they had the keyboard in alphabatical order, but people didn't like it because they were used to the other type. so they started making keyboards the same order they were when they were using the type writers.

In order to slow down typists when the typewriter was first invented. If the typist went too fast, the keys would jam, so the "qwerty" arrangement of the keyboard was invented.
Seriously.

The whole idea of the "QWERTY" keyboard is to have the most common letters more accessable. So that it would be easier to touch type.

The left hand types about half the letters, the right hand the other half. The word "TYPEWRITER" is the longest word in one row on the keyboard.

I think they are set up by popularity...the most commonly used letters are the ones your fingers are the closest to....explains why Q is way up in the corner!

Because keybords are in the "QWERTY" order. Have you ever tried to use a keypad thats in "ABC" order it's a lot harder to use. Read this artical and see if it helps.
