well my best friend is a guy. so I have always firmly believed that its possible, but even so he has numerous times tried to make it more and I just couldnt because hes become like a brother to me. So he and I have remained just friends. And nowadays my best friend is my boyfriend. But in a completely different way, - he is because I sacrifice all my time for him and he does for me , from the rest of our friends, so there is no alternative but to be each others' best friends. Hey thats why marriage happens - your spouse IS your best friend.

No general rule. But take this:
It is possible when the age gap is 10 years minimum.
Or if she is married with kid(s)
Such frienship is based more on affinity than on sentiments and romance.
But with somebody of the same age, it is a little difficult to be just friends. This doesn't mean that all such friendships land in bed.
Some have managed to maintain a wholesome and chaste relationship.

I had guy friends since I was in nappies. I say 'had' because as soon as I turned twelve, things changed. Guys would become my friend, be really sweet, charming and a shoulder to cry on and then they would choose their moment to try it on.
I would like to believe that men and women can be friends. I do believe it CAN happen, but I haven't been that lucky. I think guy friends bring a whole new dimension of 'friendship' but in my experience, lots of guys have just become friends with me to try and take it to the next level.
I do however have gay guy friends...

Ah that good ole "When Harry Met Sally" debate!
I used to think so... but too many times a guy has confessed he has more than friend-feelings and then it makes things awkward. But on the other hand, it's the best grounding for a relationship. 2 of my best relationships and now my marriage were built on friendships first...

Very much so, because if both are not attracted to the other there is no possibility of anything else happening. However, if just one has feelings for the other the friendship is doomed.
